Is Microneedling Painful? An Honest Answer
By Tilly Rose · 5 June 2026
Pain is probably the number one reason people put off booking microneedling. They've read something online, or seen a video, and they're not sure what they're getting themselves into.
I want to give you an honest answer not just a reassuring one designed to just get you through the door.
The short answer
With proper numbing cream applied beforehand, most people find SkinPen microneedling very manageable. The most common description I hear is "pressure and light scratching" rather than pain. Many clients are surprised by how comfortable it is.
That said, everyone's pain tolerance is different, and some areas of the face are more sensitive than others.
What actually happens before the treatment
Before I start, I apply a topical numbing cream to the full treatment area and leave it for ten to fifteen minutes. This isn't a token gesture it does genuinely reduces sensation significantly. By the time I begin, most clients can't feel very much at all.
What it feels like during
The sensation varies across different parts of the face. The forehead and cheeks tend to be the least sensitive. The area around the upper lip, chin, and nose tends to be more so as the skin is thinner there and closer to bone.
Most clients describe it as a light vibrating or scratching feeling. A few describe mild stinging in the more sensitive areas. Genuine pain like the kind that makes you want to stop is rare, and if it happens I adjust immediately.
After the treatment
Once the numbing cream wears off your skin will feel a bit like mild sunburn, warm, tight, and slightly tender to touch. This usually settles within a few hours. By the following morning most clients feel completely normal.
The honest version
I won't tell you it's completely painless, because that wouldn't be accurate for everyone. What I will say is that in my time of performing microneedling treatments, I have never had a client who wanted to stop once we started. The experience is very different from what most people imagine beforehand.
If you're genuinely worried about pain tolerance, mention it at your consultation. We can talk through the numbing process in more detail and make sure you feel completely comfortable before we begin.
